UK New Citizen is the organisation that promotes the project of an integrated society, a modern Britain with democracy and the rule of law as the bonds that tie us together.
UK New Citizen believes in the social integration, as active and contributive citizens, of legally settled refugees, immigrants and their descendants.  We also promote the consideration of the legitimate needs of the receiving population.
Thus, UK New Citizen promotes a responsible and committed practice of citizenship among the British population in general, believing that now in Britain, we are all New Citizens, beyond differences of race, faith and cultural origins.
New citizens...
new in a project of modern democracy, new in the commitment for a fairer society; also new in our sight of a future to build up together, rather than a past that divide us by group.
We want to help to build a fairer society for us, the new UK Citizens, for our children and for all future generations of Britons to come.

Campaign:
in defence of democracy

UK New Citizen has been tirelessly campaigning for democracy and the sustainment of democratic institutions in Britain.
British parliamentary democracy has been the key to secure shelter and protection to innumerable people that suffered persecution and violence in their original country. We believe that the same British democratic institutions show us now the way to generate a modern democracy and the best living conditions for all UK citizens, beyond differences of race, faith and origins.

Recent activities: UK New Citizen contributes to the integration debate

Sylvia Corona, Chair of UK New Citizen, has recently presented a paper in the 30th Conference of the Political Economy of the World System (PEWS) Section of the American Sociological Association (ASA): “Islam and the modern orientalist world-system”, held in the USA, between April 27 – 30, 2006.

UK New Citizen also participated in the Conference “International Order and Disorder in a Changing World” organised by the American Graduate School (AGS) of International Relations and Diplomacy in France on June 2006.

More recently, Sylvia has chaired the panel “Britishness, Englishness, Multi-Layered Citizenships” and presented a paper on Citizenship in the First Graduate Conference ‘Contentious Politics’ organised by the European Consortium for Political Research (Essex, 7-9 September 06); she is now invited to make a presentation in the new International conference of the European Sociological Organisation (Slovakia, 19-22 January 07).

How has UK New Citizen contributed to the sustainment of democratic institutions in Britain?

Citizenship ceremonies: UK New Citizen was one of the few organisations in Britain that supported the project of citizenship ceremonies. Now a proven success, the ceremonies have become -as envisaged by UK New Citizen years ago- a powerful symbol of integration not only for the new but also the old citizens of contemporary Britain.

Not longer 'immigrants' but New Citizens:one of the first issues we started campaigning six years ago was about the need to generate a new approach for the social changes in Britain. We proposed that the concept of "New Citizens" should replace the old category of "second generation of immigrants" and especially, that of "refugee children", as a necessary step towards a more cohesive society. Nowadays, the media and political personalities are talking about new citizens; more important yet, immigrants and their decendents themselves have a growing awareness of their enhanced role and responsibility as the new citizens of modern Britain. Our campaign has indeed helped to produce another positive change!
