CITIZENSHIP

Being a new UK Citizen is much more than having a passport and the permit to live and work here. Citizenship give us the possibility of being a full member in the society, enjoying rights and honouring the associated duties in a balanced approach of individual and communitarian development.

A large number of the British population has immigrants in their family tree. Nowadays, atracted by the safety and prosperity that Britain has consistently enjoyed in the last decades, modern immigrants and refugees have arrived to the UK in critical condition. With no money and lacking essential skills (i.e. no English) some newcomers may have spent months, sometimes years, relaying on public funds. The challenges that immigration represent to both, the receiving population and newcomers themselves, are evidenced in the consideration that the media and public opinion in general give to immigration issues. Thus, British population find difficult to answer the following questions:

Is it true that immigrants and refugees are here only for selfish reasons, just asking for benefits and never giving back to the society that has generoulsy provided for their welfare and safety? Or, is the former question just the product of widespread racism and discrimination persistently remaining among the white, Anglo-Saxon population?

UK New Citizen believes that greedy selfishness and racism are not a fair description of neither the majority of the newcomers nor the receiving population in general. Modern Britain is the vital, dynamic combination of tradition and transformation made by all its citizens, beyond divisions and differences. Nowadays, we are all NEW UK CITIZENS, maybe different in race, origins or faith, united though in our willigness to make positive contributions to a fairer society.

 Workshops in Citizenship

The challenge to promote a more committed practice of civic citizenship among newcomers and the population in general, has been addressed by UK New Citizen through the generation of training workshops.UK New Citizen is organising Workshops in Citizenship, especially tailored for teachers and community projects working with immigrants and refugees. Volunteering

Ill children have to be always the object of our care and devotion, beyond the consideration if they are part of an ethnic community or if their family ancestors have lived in Britain for generations. Thus, a hospital is always worth of our financial support since it provides care for everybody regardless race and faith. Likewise, crime is also our concern and neighbourhood regeneration works for everyone's benefit. Therefore, supporting financially and as a volunteer any of the established charities and community projects makes it clear our attitude and contributions to a fairer society

...Volunteering is a way to show the meaning of being a "new citizen"!
